The ex-Kaduna governor, Nasir El Rufai, the defence from the All Progressive Conference (APC) to the Social Democrats (SDP) met with enthusiasm.
According to Naija News, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has described the move as a step towards saving Nigeria from poor governance and underdevelopment.
Joining social media on Monday, Adebayo praised Elrufai’s decision, calling it a “significant addition” to the SDP’s mission.
“On behalf of @thesdpng and the enthusiastic members of patriotic Democrats who believe in Nigeria and her promises of inevitable greatness, I sincerely welcome my dear brother @elrufai to the party,” wrote Adebayo.
He described El Rufai as a “hardworking and wise leader” and highlighted his potential contribution to the party’s fight against poverty and unrest.
Adebayo also reiterated the SDP’s commitment to ethical governance and social justice, urging Nigerians to join the party movement for the revival of the nation.
“There’s no time to waste. Join us in the march again! God bless Nigeria,” he said.
El Rufai’s exile triggers a political response
El Rufai, formerly Minister of the Federal Capital Region (FCT) and governor of Kaduna, brings great political experience to the SDP.
His departure from the APC has served as a strong criticism of the ruling party’s handling of national issues, political analysts said.
His move sparked speculation about potential asylum from both the APC and the People’s Democrats (PDP) as disillusionment grew within the political landscape of Nigeria.
In his statement, Adebayo swipes across the parties and described the government’s year as “the year of locusts.” He emphasized that clean and ethical politics must form the foundation for Nigeria’s revival and Africa’s liberation.
Due to the influence of El-Rufai, SDP’s “Hope Again” campaign could gain traction as the 2027 election approaches.
El Rufai previously downplayed rumors of asylum from the APC earlier this year, which led to a major political development.
Prior to his asylum, he reportedly held a meeting on prominent figures on Sunday, but the purpose of these discussions remains private.
