Tension is currently high in Rivers State after arson suspects reportedly detonated explosives at the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday morning.
Naija News reported that APC is the main opposition political party in Rivers State.
The state is preparing to hold municipal elections today, Saturday, October 5th.
However, just hours before the exercise, the APC’s secretariat in Port Harcourt was reportedly attacked.
According to the leadership, video clips available online show that the main gate and security post of the APC secretariat, as well as some nearby buildings, were damaged in the incident, in which dynamite is believed to have been used.
In a brief message sent to journalists in the state, the party’s interim chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, said the attack on the secretariat was carried out by supporters of Governor Siminalai Hubala.
Okocha writes: “Early on Saturday morning, pro-Hubala civilian soldiers detonated dynamite at our office.
“A second arson attempt was unsuccessful as security at the gate quickly extinguished the fire.”
The APC had earlier announced its intention to abstain from local government elections scheduled across the state this Saturday.
In a surprising turn of events, the state’s ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was established under the leadership of Prime Minister Hong Johnson. Chukwuemeka Aaron also announced his decision to refrain from participating in the election.
