The 2023 governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Gombe State Khamis Mailantaruki has announced his affiliation to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Naija News reports that Mr Mailantaruki made this decision three months after he left the NNPP and did not switch to any other political party during that time.
In his acceptance speech at the party headquarters, Mailantaruki said he joined the PDP to strengthen the party’s prospects, adding that his involvement will help the opposition party to topple the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state by 2027. He said he would contribute to the goal.
Mr Mailantaruki criticized the policies being implemented by the APC-led government at both the federal and state levels, highlighting the failure to achieve effective governance.
“PDP is the only strong political party that can seize power from the APC. That is why I decided to join the APC after leaving the NNPP,” Mr Mailantaruki said.
While slamming Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, Mailantaruki said, “Some of his administration’s ruthless policies, such as stripping away land ownership rights and forcing civil servants to undergo daily biometric registration at work, It is unacceptable that civil servants are required to register for biometrics at the workplace, failing which they will be ineligible for salary payments.”
The former gubernatorial candidate pointed out that it is unfair to force workers to come to work five times a day without commensurate pay during this time of economic hardship.
Meanwhile, the PDP Gombe State Chairman, Abner Kwasukebe, who received the governorship candidate, commended Mailantaruki for his bold step.
“Mr Maylantarki’s departure from the party is a great success for the party and we are committed to a level playing field for all party members,” he added.
