The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognized barrister Julius Habre as the national chairman of the Labor Party (LP).
Naija News reported that this was in accordance with a court order of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Recall that on October 8, 2024, Justice Emeka Nwite justified the Labor Party’s national conference to be held in Nnewi in March 2024.
The court declared the convention legal and ordered INEC to recognize the leadership of Habre and the National Working Committee (NWC) elected during the convention.
INEC’s decision to recognize Mr. Abure was disclosed in a letter addressed to Mr. Abure and the party’s national secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim.
INEC Director-General Rose O’Allan-Anthony has called on the Labor Party to participate in the 4th Political Parties Conference.
This is the first time that INEC will work with the party under the leadership of Mr Habre after a long legal dispute.
Speaking after the INEC meeting, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim expressed satisfaction that the electoral management body complied with the court’s judgment.
He noted that the party had been unfairly excluded from its previous activities, but has now regained its place among the 18 registered political parties.
Mr Ibrahim said: “We are happy that INEC has complied with the court order. This leaves the Labor Party ready to participate in all future political activities including the Anambra governorship election.”
Mr. Ibrahim also said that the differences within the party were simply family matters and urged party members to unite under Mr. Habre’s leadership.
He stressed that the party was stronger following the resolution and called for a united effort to restore confidence within the Labor Party.
“This is not a win-lose situation. We are all winners, and party primacy must guide all party members as we work towards achieving the party’s goals.” he added.
