“Music truly has the power to heal, uplift and bring us together,” Jennifer Lopez said while celebrating the 50th anniversary of the American Music Awards (AMAs).
The music feature features past AMA winners including country star Carrie Underwood, Cuban singer Gloria Estefan, pop superstar and actress Lopez, and five-time host Jimmy Kimmel. A pre-recorded interview was broadcast.
Lopez reflected on her most memorable experience at the AMAs in a taped interview that aired during the ceremony, which was scheduled to “celebrate half a century of groundbreaking music and pop culture history.”
It’s been about two months since she filed for divorce from actor Ben Affleck after two years of marriage.
Lopez said that paying tribute to the late Cuban singer Celia Cruz during her performance at the 2013 AMAs was “one of the most special nights of my life so far.”
“She is an icon not only in the Latin music world but around the world,” she said.
“Music truly has the power to heal, uplift and connect us.
“And the AMA has been showcasing it for half a century. I’m excited for the next 50 years of music and magic."
The 55-year-old also recalled watching the awards show “when I was little” and described the 50-year celebration as “pretty incredible.”
“My first performance at the AMA was in 2001. That was a long time ago…but the energy in the room was emotional,” Lopez said.
“Winning a fan-voted award is very special because it comes directly from the people who made the music. It’s just a humbling experience.
“It was obviously a great honor to host the AMA in 2015. I was determined to be different every time I attended an AMA.
“We created a dance medley to all the great songs of the year, and we wanted everyone to feel that love and energy.
“And maybe someday we’ll do it again – who knows?”
The annual AMA ceremony will be held again in May.
