The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KAANSIEC) has declared that it will proceed with the local government elections scheduled for tomorrow, October 26, 2024.
Naija News reported that the affirmation follows the court’s contradictory orders regarding Saturday’s municipal elections.
The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Simon Amobeda, had earlier barred the commission from conducting elections.
The court also dismissed KANSIEC chairman Sani Malmufasi and other members of the electoral committee, citing concerns over their alleged political affiliations.
The court also restricted police participation in elections.
However, in a contradictory verdict, the Kano State High Court on Friday annulled that judgment and granted KAANSIEC permission to proceed with the elections on Saturday.
At a press conference on Friday, Malmfasi expressed confidence that all necessary preparations for the elections have been completed and stressed that there would be no delays despite previous legal obstacles.
“We are fully prepared and there is no turning back. The court in charge of local government matters has made its decision and ruled that the elections should proceed. Police also said: They have been instructed to provide the necessary security for the exercise.
Mr Malmfasi also mocked political parties, contesting the elections saying they did not even participate.
“The political parties defending the challenge to the local government elections are not even participating. They refuse to recognize the commission and are not involved in any part of the electoral process,” he added.
KANSEC Chairman mentioned six political parties participating in the elections.
Political parties include the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Action Alliance (AA), Zenith Labor Party (ZLP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), African Action Congress (AAC), and Action Congress (AC).
