Italian metal giants Lacuna Coil have announced their 10th studio album ‘Sleepless Empire’, their first collection of new music since 2019’s ‘Black Anima’, and new single ‘Oxygen’. . The new song is accompanied by a captivating music video, shot in Latin and directed by Daniele Tofani, starring singer Cristina Scabbia.
Christina Scabbia commented on the track and the experience of filming the video:
“‘Oxygen’ is a powerful exploration of emotional conflict and inner conflict. The lyrics convey the feeling of drowning in a toxic environment, both literally (in the video) and figuratively, and the song ‘Oxygen’ is a powerful exploration of emotional conflict and inner conflict. ” Attempts at relief are somehow in vain. This song encapsulates the emotion of struggling to break free from what holds us back when the journey is full of hardships. This is a raw ode to vulnerability, resilience, and the courage to face what seems insurmountable. Having to stay in the water for hours during the video shoot was cathartic for me. The realization that the soothing feeling of floating can quickly turn dangerous and deadly if you’re not careful was a great fit for the song’s theme. ”
The inspiration to create Sleepless Empire came during the sessions for Comalies XX (2022), the acclaimed remake of the groundbreaking record of the same title. The writing and recording took place in northern Italy, between the band’s hometown of Milan and Como, where SPVN studios are located. As with previous albums, production was done in-house under the direction of Marco “Maki” Coti-Zerati, and the artwork was hand-curated by talented Italian artist Roberto Toderico.
Two other special talents enrich the album. Guest vocalists Randy Blythe of Lamb of God sings “Hosting the Shadow” and Ash Costello of New Year’s Day sings “In the Mean Time.”
As a testament to the band’s love for the gaming world (this was seen in past efforts such as the card game “Horns Up” and a collaboration with Zombicide, for whom they wrote the song “Never Dawn”), the band I did the following: We created an oracle “game” played with custom-made dice that is only available in the boxed set version of Sleepless Empire. The new album consists of 11 new tracks. And each is a richly textured soundtrack that recreates a specific time and place. On Sleepless Empire, the location is dark, cinematic, and unmistakably true to the unique characteristics that have made Lacuna Cock a storied name in heavy music history.
The band shares:
“Sleepless Empire captures through our eyes the turmoil of a generation trapped in a never-stopping digital world where social media consumes our identities and every day brings us one step closer to becoming soulless zombies. We find ourselves in the middle, witnessing a completely analog world and a modern world, confronting evolution, and searching for the true meaning of it all.Throughout every song, this journey is an undercurrent of rebellion. It is a desperate cry to regain oneself in a time where we seem to have lost our sense of time and reality.”
It’s truly the season of friendship for Lacuna Coil. Following the performance with Ash Costello and Randy Blythe, the band heads to the UK and Ireland with special guests and friends from Finland, Blind Channel.
