The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised Governor Siminalai Hubala to comply with a court order restricting the conduct of October 5 local government elections in the state.
The PDP maintained that no one should participate in or be allowed to conduct local government elections that deviate from the court’s ruling.
The party warned the governor of the consequences of not complying with the court order.
The party’s state chairman, Chukwuemeka Aaron, issued the warning in a statement on Friday.
He stressed that it would be illegal to participate in or hold elections contrary to the court’s ruling.
Aaron called on people to ignore any announcements calling municipal elections on October 5, citing a Federal High Court ruling that blocked the vote.
Aaron reiterated the party’s determination to uphold the rule of law, adding that RSIEC and the state government cannot choose which court orders to follow or ignore.
He said: “The PDP has considered all cases related to local government elections and has concluded that even though we are the ruling party in Rivers State, we cannot commit any form of illegality or “We cannot support or encourage impunity.”
“We cannot choose which orders of the court we will follow or not, so we must abide by the judgment of the appropriate court.
“We therefore appeal to the Rivers State Governor, who happens to be a member of our great political party, the PDP, to the Federal High Court, in line with the character and ethics of our party, the PDP, and the PDP. We call on you to fully and strictly abide by the judgment and cancel the planned October 5th Rivers State local government elections.”
