This week’s MI Local was packed with exclusive premieres of new music from local artists, including “Ruins” by Taylor Druce and “Solar Hits” by the duo known as Dirt Room. Also, punk trio The Idiot Kids covered Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” and versatile rock band Rose St. Germain released a 45-rpm record, “You’ll Always Love Me.” is planned.
We have another studio guest this week! Detroit-based singer-songwriter Josie Palmer stopped by to talk about her recent releases and debut her new song “Tuck Everlasting.” Blending alternative folk and indie rock, Palmer furthers her delicate yet incredible vocal talent, developing slow, swooning choruses and creating catchy, dreamy melodies. Palmer’s new song, “Tuck Everlasting,” is inspired by the plot of Natalie Babbitt’s book and its film adaptation, and is about the difficult choices of carving out one’s own path, especially the emotional and emotional aspects of relationships. It is applied to breaking out of the cycle of codependency.
Palmer’s father was a jazz musician who “could play any instrument” and she immediately aspired to follow in his footsteps. Her parents eventually gave Palmer her own guitar as a gift. “When I was a kid, I would drag (my dad’s) guitar around the house and bang it.” After learning guitar, it was piano, then voice lessons, then violin, then youth symphony, and then “a lot of musical theater.”
So with music being so central to her life, I couldn’t help but ask Palmer what she loves most about music.
“This is the closest thing to magic we have,” Palmer said, “that’s my best way to describe the music.”
Palmer started releasing songs three years ago, but apart from “magic,” she has spent most of her life writing and composing songs, and in fact, Palmer doesn’t particularly like the creative process. I love you.
“But I feel a lot of inhibitions about releasing music and it’s always in my head that I feel like I’m not allowed to do it, even though no one has said that.” So I’m glad I’ve been able to write more and put it out there more easily these past few years.
Palmer is also part of the band Vaega, a quintet with a penchant for dream pop and shoegaze, with each member also having their own solo projects. Check out Vaega’s recent singles here.
Josie Palmer will be performing live at Corktown Tavern this Thursday night.
