A tense situation unfolded in Aba on Saturday when masked men, believed to be police officers, disrupted a Labor Party (LP) meeting.
The incident occurred when more than 20 masked people stormed the venue and demanded silence from attendees.
The situation took a dramatic turn when five masked men approached the high table and confronted Prince Ngo Ndubuse, secretary of the Labor Party’s Local Government Electoral Committee, announcing their arrest.
However, party members quickly turned against the masked men and insisted that a warrant be filed for Ndubueze’s arrest.
Protesting the attempted arrest, more than 500 Labor members marched with Ndubueze to Aba Regional Police Command to demand accountability from authorities.
After the incident, Mr. Ndubueze expressed his defiance to Vanguard against what he described as intimidation from Governor Alex Otti.
He accused the governor of trying to impose candidates for the chairmanship and city council posts in the next local government elections scheduled for November 2nd.
Ndubueze said: “I have not received an arrest warrant from anywhere. I don’t even know if they are police officers, but as a law-abiding citizen, I will accompany the police. We will never give in to the governor’s intimidation. We will not allow him to impose his candidates in this local government election.
“This governor came to power through a legitimate election but is trying to impose a candidate on him. The Labor Party in Abia State will not tolerate coercion.”
