Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has expressed frustration over the loss of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the party’s 2023 presidential ticket. He also said he was heartbroken.
According to Momodu, the pain of losing the PDP presidential ticket is part of the reason for the current crisis rocking the main opposition party.
Mr Modu said in an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday that although Mr Wike was confident of winning the PDP ticket, he was disappointed with the final result.
Naija News recalls that Mr Atiku won the PDP primaries with 371 votes while his nearest rival, Mr Wike, secured 237 votes.
Mr. Wike, who was Rivers State governor and four other PDP governors at the time, formed the G5 to openly campaign against Mr. Atiku in the 2023 presidential election.
On the issues that continue to plague the PDP even after the 2023 elections, Modu said he hoped Wike would overcome his defeat but said he had not yet recovered.
“The first problem was that he (Wike) lost to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the 2022 primaries and since then he seems unable to recover from such a disappointment.
“Wike was confident that he would get the ticket and be the next president of Nigeria.
“So he was suffering, which is understandable. Anyone who has lost something in their life is always going to feel very sad. So you can’t let that hold him back.
“We were hopeful that as the days went by, he would get over it. But he never got over it,” Momodu said.
