The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has canceled the chairmanship election in Ondo West Local Government Area due to the use of the outdated logo of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on the ballot paper.
Naija News reports that the chairman of the commission, Joseph Aremo, announced the development at a press conference in Akure on Saturday, adding that the election has been postponed to Sunday.
Aremo explained that this error was brought to the attention of the commission, prompting the decision to annul the original procedure and re-conduct the elections.
He reassured residents of the local government area and the status of the Commission's commitment to credibility and transparency.
Aremo said: “We realized that the New Nigeria Peoples Party logo on the ballot paper was indeed the old logo of the party. Then a committee was held and we gave equal support to all political parties participating in the elections. We have decided that we should provide a fairer and better platform for people to have the opportunity they deserve.
“For the chairmanship where the NNPP has joined the Ondo West LG, the commission has taken the position that the election is either canceled or invalid. to 4:00 p.m., the election for the Ondo West LG chairmanship will be held again.
“Normally we would have expected the party to pay attention to this issue, but nevertheless, the committee has decided that the entire chairmanship election in Ondo West is invalid.”
Aremo said the party's new logo will be featured on the ballot papers for the elections scheduled to be held on Sunday.
He said, “Everything will be ready by 11 a.m. tomorrow.”
The Speaker said that apart from the incident regarding the chairmanship election in Ondo West, there were no complaints from other local councils regarding the election.
