Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has said he will support a candidate from another political party for the November 2 local government elections in the state.
Mr Otti, Nigeria’s only elected governor from the Labor Party, made this statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Relations. Ferdinand Equoma on the ABN TV show “Political Perspective”.
This follows reports that the governor is courting the Zenith Labor Party amid the Labor Party’s ongoing crisis.
Mr Ekeoma admitted that the Labor Party in Abia State was in crisis.
He clarified that the primary election is an internal party activity that complies with election laws, and that party members are expected to participate or contest the results.
The aide responded to allegations of unfair primary procedures by citing examples where stakeholders resolved issues through dialogue.
He expressed confidence in the imminent victory of candidates supported by Governor Otti in the November 2 local government elections, regardless of party affiliation.
He reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labor Party and dispelled rumors of defection.
Alex Otti approves ₦70,000 minimum wage for Abia workers
Meanwhile, Mr Otti approved the introduction of a minimum wage of ₦70,000 for workers in Abia State.
At a press conference on Tuesday on the outcome of this week’s executive committee meeting in Umuahia, the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okei Kanu, highlighted the governor’s commitment to supporting the workforce.
He pointed out that the new minimum wage payment will come into effect from the end of October 2024.
“Minimum wage payments will begin within the next few days, and the governor has approved it,” he said.
