The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to struggle with internal strife following its defeat in the 2023 general elections when the All Progressives Congress (APC) remained in power.
Despite repeated attempts by party officials, including the governor, to resolve the leadership crisis, no definitive solution has yet been found.
The next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, initially seen as a pivotal moment for the party’s future, now faces uncertainty.
The meeting scheduled for October 24 has already been postponed twice. It was initially postponed to August 15 as party members took part in a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, but was later postponed to September 26 due to an incomplete state assembly and key positions within the party not being filled.
As the new date approaches, there are growing concerns within the party about whether the NEC will be able to address the contentious issue of the term of office of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum.
Sources said a significant portion of the party’s governors agreed that Damagum should resign.
However, unresolved circumstances, including the withdrawal of the lawsuit and the selection of a replacement from the North Central region, have caused delays.
One party insider said the failure to meet these key conditions raises questions about whether the NEC meeting will proceed as planned or whether it will lead to further postponements and prolong divisions within the party. It was revealed that
“Those who went to court need to withdraw their cases and the North Central District needs to choose a replacement,” a source told Daily Trust. None of these steps have been completed yet, so even if the NEC is held this Thursday, another meeting may be needed in December to complete the transition. ”
Another factor contributing to uncertainty is the number of unresolved intraparty issues that require the NEC’s attention.
NEC member and National Youth Deputy Leader of the PDP, Tim Osador, said the ongoing state congresses in Abia, Ebonyi and Edo, among others, need to be completed before the party can move forward.
“There are several issues that the NEC needs to resolve, many of which are still pending.
“For example, while the Ondo State governorship election is approaching, the legislative sessions of states such as Abia, Ebonyi and Edo are yet to be concluded. The Anambra State legislative session was postponed last week due to security concerns; There are five or six states,” Osador said.
Osador added that the NEC committee assigned to address some of these issues is still writing its report, making it difficult to have a comprehensive discussion at Thursday’s scheduled meeting. .
“The NEC cannot deal with these issues half-heartedly,” he said, adding: “It would be better to wait another two or three weeks and have a full discussion where everything is on the table.” Ta.
