The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied claims that there was an agreement to hand over the presidential ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or a prominent member of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party‘s deputy national youth leader, Timothy Osador, made the announcement in an interview with Punch on Friday.
He stressed that the party remains committed to a transparent and democratic process in determining presidential candidates, adding that decisions regarding candidacy will be made according to established procedures.
“No one has told the party that they are running on the PDP platform to take the position and there is no agreement that a ticket will be given to a particular person. As of today, the sale of forms We haven’t issued any notices and we haven’t called any primaries. So we don’t know who will run and who won’t,” Osador said.
Mr Osadore’s rebuttal came just two days after Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike ruled out the possibility of Mr Atiku winning the PDP presidential ticket again in 2027.
He said Mr Wike's position may be valid given what has happened in the past.
However, Osador said Atiku cannot be left out of the ticket race, referring to Donald Trump’s victory.
“If Trump can get Kamala Harris, anything is possible,” he said. “Again, Weick’s point is valid. At the end of the day, it’s about the people, so I’m not going to back up my observations.” Only those who are immune to change will discard most of it.
“So maybe there was something about the branding or the way he (Atiku) branded himself in the past that didn’t resonate with people. But people still think the election I am of the opinion that it was fraudulent and that he actually won. In any case, I think he ran and won without trying to win the support of everyone, including Nyesom Wike himself. I don’t think so.”
