The PDP has been embroiled in internal turmoil since 2023, with some party members criticizing Damagum for failing to implement effective reforms within the party.
In response to the ongoing issues, PDP MPs from the North Central region demanded Mr. Damagumu’s replacement, insisting that the new appointment must come from their region.
They cited Article 47, Section 6 of the Party Constitution, which states that when a vacancy occurs in a party office, the executive committee must appoint a successor from the same area as the outgoing officer to complete the term. are.
However, in an interview with Saturday Punch, the 2023 PDP governorship candidate for Ogun State, Mr. Segun Shaunmi, expressed a different opinion from that of the former National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Olologbondiyan.
While Mr. Ologbondiyan maintained that his replacement should indeed come from the North Central Zone, Mr. Shaunmi maintained that the position was not designated exclusively for that region.
“What the North-Central government wants is for Mr. Damagum to resign from his position and return to the position of national vice-chairman. The zone will then appoint a suitable person to replace him for the full term. Deaf,” Ologbondiyan said.
“We demand that North Central be given its rightful place in the national working committee, namely the position of national chairman of the party,” he added.
However, Shaunmi said, “What caused the last chairman to be dismissed?” Isn’t the central issue of this issue the North Central Region issue? If this continues, the party will lose.
“I’m from the South and I have the best ideas to move this party right now. We need to bring young people into this party. Even putting myself forward for this, I’m So you’re taking a huge risk with your money and time. So this isn’t about the zone. This is about the PDP, and I’m saying this. It is impossible to maintain a party-dictated state.”
