The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended the Nigeria Police Force for withdrawing from the October 5 local government elections.
Rivers State PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka has advised Governor Siminalaya Hubala to cancel the local government elections.
Chukwuemeka said police had indicated that their personnel would not participate in the elections, and violence may be a feature of the elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, Chukwuemeka reiterated that the PDP will not participate in the election.
Mr Chukwuemeka also said the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw voter registration from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) was a great development.
Naija News reports that amid the tension over the local government elections, Governor Nunobara has insisted that the elections will be held on Saturday.
However, the Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Irinji Koko, said the command staff would not allow the breakdown of law and order in the state.
“The Nigeria Police Force encourages all parties to seek appropriate legal redress if they feel offended by any decision or action related to the electoral process.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to maintaining law and order and will not stand by in the face of potential chaos.
“Necessary steps will be taken to implement the court’s order. All area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical commanders are directed to fully comply with the Federal High Court’s judgment,” Irinji Koko said. said.
