Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said he proposed a rotating presidential system with six-year terms and a rotating presidential system to advance democracy.
Naija News reports that in a letter to the National Assembly, Atiku appealed to members to immediately begin amending the constitution to accommodate a six-year single term and a rotating presidential system.
The former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate’s letter was addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, Vice President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Constitutional Review Committee, and is dated August 30, 2024.
Explaining the rationale for the proposal, Atiku’s Special Adviser on Media, Paul Ibe, said the former Vice President’s recommendation “will help the path of constitutional democracy in Nigeria, especially as the National Assembly continues its ongoing efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution.” This is to move the world forward.” .
“These amendments aim to raise the standard of educational qualifications of aspiring politicians. End the violent takeover of political parties and thereby strengthen their internal structures.”
Ibe added that it would reduce the tendency of political parties to violate the constitution and election laws.
“Reducing the tendency of political parties to violate the Constitution, the Electoral Act, the rules and guidelines established thereunder, and the constitution of political parties.”
“What this means is that political parties are given very wide discretion to breach the boundaries of electoral law.
“Such indiscipline and disloyalty to electoral standards by political parties creates chaos in the system.
“The above amendments will establish the necessary discipline for democracy,” Ibe said.
