The Africa Education Medal was established by T4 Education and external HP Inc and is one of the three World Education Medals.
Mayank Dhingra, senior education business leader at HP, congratulated Ms. Murimirwa and said, “Her tireless work has set her at the forefront of breaking down barriers for girls in education.”
“We know that many will want to follow in her footsteps and build a world where all children have the quality education that is their right.”
According to Camfed, the majority of girls in rural Africa do not complete secondary school.
Exclusion from education plays out at every stage of a young woman’s life and is passed on to future generations.
The charity supports schools to tackle barriers to enrollment for marginalized girls and partners with governments to support the development of education that better meets the needs of girls.
After graduation, we will enable them to transition into work and entrepreneurship, providing a platform for them to step up as leaders who support the younger generation of girls.
Ms Murimirwa was elected as the first Chair of the Camfed Association, a pan-African network of 279,000 women leaders educated with the support of Camfed.
Each member financially supports at least three girls in their community to stay in school.
“The need is great and we cannot do this alone. Together, we are raising the flag for a more just world,” she said.
