An old video clip featuring former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has resurfaced on social media, reigniting debate over the problem of godfatherism prevalent in Nigerian politics.
In the video, Mr Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), campaigned passionately against the Godfather Syndrome that he claims is plaguing some states in the country.
In the video, Wike stressed that the influence of the Godfather will not be tolerated in Rivers State. He pointedly noted that while such a system may be prevalent in places like Lagos State, it would not be allowed to take root in Rivers.
“It may happen in Lagos State, but it cannot happen in Rivers. We are completely different. As governor, we can’t stop it because it comes and goes.
“The day my term ends, by the grace of God, I will go. We will do it here when we are thinking about what is happening in Lagos State and it may be difficult.
“You can’t keep saying you have to become the godfather of the nation. That’s the problem, it’s impossible,” he said
