For more than 30 years, the Texas Music Authority has played a vital role in fostering the state’s vibrant music industry, contributing to economic growth and job creation. In 2023 alone, music-related businesses and education programs in Texas supported approximately 90,000 jobs, generated $4.6 billion in revenue and generated $10.8 billion in economic activity. These numbers highlight the importance of the music industry to the state’s economic health and cultural identity.
Adding to this thriving landscape, Rockwall has been designated a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community, making it the 64th city in the state to earn this honor.
Rockwall has long been the host of popular events such as the Concerts by the Lake Series and the San Jacinto Music Series, demonstrating its deep connection to live music. With this new certification, the city is poised to attract even more music-related business opportunities and talent.
To commemorate this designation, a special ceremony was held in September before performances of the San Jacinto Music Series, sponsored by the Texas Bureau of Music, Visit Rockwall, and the City of Rockwall.
“Congratulations to the City of Rockwall on achieving the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “Music is key to the Texas brand and deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state. Communities like Rockwall work tirelessly to attract and develop the local music industry to foster local job creation and economic growth.”
Local leaders also echoed the governor’s opinion. State Sen. Bob Hall highlighted Rockwall’s community spirit and commitment to developing local talent, and State Representative Justin Holland praised the unity and cultural vibrancy the designation represents.
“As the ‘Free Live Music Capital of North Texas,' Rock Wall is poised to make an even bigger impact on the Texas music scene,” Hall said. “This accomplishment not only celebrates the city’s rich musical heritage, but also strengthens its role as a center for community engagement and economic growth.”
Rockwall Mayor Trace Johannessen is proud of the city’s commitment to live music and emphasized how the new designation will enhance the local music scene.
“By joining the Texas Music Office’s network of Music Friendly Texas Certified Communities, we are taking our vibrant music scene to the next level. This partnership will allow us to connect musical talent with the community. It will further solidify Rockwall’s reputation as a hub for engagement.”
Rockwall hosts more than 100 free live music events each year and plans to expand its influence in Texas’ growing music industry. This new milestone represents a promising future for Rockwall’s cultural and economic landscape as the city continues to build on its rich musical tradition.
