Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are scheduled to meet today to decide on the fate of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday.
The important gathering is aimed at addressing internal disagreements over the party’s leadership, particularly regarding the term of office of the acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.
The latest development comes despite a prior agreement in Akure last week that Damagumu should resign from his post during the scheduled NEC meeting. This suggests that there is a growing movement to extend the period.
The agreement was initially seen as a step toward quelling ongoing discord within the party following its loss to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 presidential election.
However, according to sources close to the party who spoke to Daily Trust, certain factions within the PDP, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Plateau State Governor Caleb Muthofan, are currently holding off on Damagum’s resignation. They say they are working together to do so.
The proposed plan would allow Damagumu to voluntarily resign after the Ondo State gubernatorial election on November 16, creating what his supporters call a "soft landing” for acting chairman.
This new strategy appears to be gaining traction among Damagum supporters as the North-Central region faces delays in naming a successor.
The situation has led to speculation that the NEC meeting will be postponed again or held under highly controversial circumstances, as the party continues to struggle to stabilize its leadership. It is clear that there are.
