Many businesses, especially smaller ones, often don’t realize the importance of cybersecurity. Research shows that most small businesses invest less than £500 a year in cybersecurity. This underinvestment is usually due to apathy or lack of understanding. It’s like insurance, you'll rarely need it, but when you do, it’s very important.
John Mc Loughlin, CEO of J2 Software, shares his experience, insight, and passion for protecting businesses large and small from the ever-growing threats in cyberspace.
Mc Loughlin begins by explaining J2 Software’s mission: to implement practical cybersecurity solutions for customers of all sizes, enabling them to work securely from anywhere.
“I don’t buy into the concept of cybersecurity as insurance. In fact, it’s a way to do more business. It allows companies to grow and serve larger markets securely. “Security should be seen as an essential tool for growth, rather than a reactive safeguard,” he says.
Bridging the investment gap between SMEs and large corporations
Interestingly, he notes that large companies are also falling short when it comes to investing in cybersecurity. “There continues to be significant underinvestment across the board,” he says. He likens this idea to buying a car and expecting it to run without maintenance or fuel.
For Mc Loughlin, visibility is key. “While we cannot stop criminals from attacking, we can ensure complete visibility so our customers can continue their operations without interruption. Long-term security requires continuous vigilance. I cannot stress enough that adaptability is essential.”
Impact of AI
With AI becoming a hot topic, he acknowledges its impact on cybersecurity. “Although AI has been leveraged by cybercriminals to create more convincing phishing attacks and scams, it is also a powerful tool for defense. be able to be detected.”
He pays close attention to the ongoing evolution of AI as rapid change continues to reshape the cybersecurity industry.
“One of the biggest challenges is always staying ahead of the curve. We have always been ahead of the curve in terms of automation and visibility, but by the time our customers have caught up to the language we are speaking, It took years,” he added.
“We prevent bad things from happening to good businesses. That’s what keeps me motivated,” he says. “We help businesses survive, and in turn those businesses support families and communities. It’s a ripple effect.”
