This coin innovatively focuses on the unique and awe-inspiring wildlife that inhabits this country. Once a term used to refer to animals prized as trophies during hunting expeditions, these majestic animals are now eagerly sought after during safaris and are only popular as photographic souvenirs. Following in the footsteps of the previous two series, which featured innovative depictions of these five species, this sequel to the award-winning numismatic series introduced in 2019 continues with elephants, rhinos, buffalos, cougars and lions . Each is considered a symbol and ambassador of this culturally rich country representing Africa’s wildlife.
Kicking off the latest series is the African elephant, or African elephant, the largest and most impressive representative of Africa’s animal kingdom and considered a symbol of power and strength. Considered “gentle giants,” they are characterized by excellent memory and very unique social behavior. Elephants have no natural enemies other than poachers and can live up to 60 years in the wild. Despite strict laws in place to protect herds, the threat to elephants remains high.
The most noticeable change from each series’ design is the depiction of each animal on the obverse. The new series will each feature fully grown animals in their environmental settings. The obverse of the first Series III coin highlights an elephant standing on a grassy mound, in a posture that suggests it is about to charge and defend its territory. The bottom half features the South African coat of arms in the center, with the words “SOUTH AFRICA” and “BIG FIVE 2024” written on either side. The award-winning reverse design, created in collaboration with the South African Mint’s team of artists, remains intact. As with the previous two series, it perfectly combines the two halves of the animal’s face from opposite formats. When two coins are placed next to each other. They make up the entire face of the animal. In the center, a circular emblem indicates the metal content, face value and weight of the coin.
