In a last-minute effort to resolve the leadership crisis of the Lagos State Assembly, President Bora Ahmed Tinubu called on key figures within all progressive conferences (APCs) to mediate the situation.
According to Punch, Governor Babajideh Sanwol, along with former governors Chief Bisi Akande (Osun), Chief Orsegun Osoba (Ogung), and Akinhunmi Ambode (Lagos), will be at the Marina Lodge in Lagos Marina. A meeting was held. on sunday. Other attendees included members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Committee (GAC), APC Lagos Chairman Cornelius Ojerabi and former state chairman Tandevalogun.
As of late Sunday night, the meeting was still ongoing and the leaders of the party were expected to have further discussions with Lagos lawmakers.
Sources familiar with the issue revealed that the conference focused on resolving a lecture dispute between expelled speaker Mudasil Obasa and current speaker Mohisora Melanda.
“As we speak, the meeting is currently being held. The party chief will call the lawmakers for another discussion. It’s all bids to resolve the crisis.
“Obasa wants to come back as a speaker at home to spend some time before he finally resigns himself. However, some lawmakers say once he returns to his seat, I believe it will be difficult for him to leave that position.
“So, President Tinubu is tired of the long-term crisis and was able to find a way by drafting the party’s big name into Lagos,” the source said.
Naija News reports that the crisis began on January 13th, 2025. This reports that 36 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa as a speaker and replaced him with Meranda, who was then vice-chairman. Since then, Obasa has challenged the removal at the Lagos State High Court, claiming that the assembly was removed during the break.
Possible Solution: Meranda may resign for Setonji
Reports suggest that Meranda could resign in support of Badagry MP Setonji David as part of a compromise proposed mediated by APC leadership.
A source for the presidency confirmed the ongoing consultations and said: There was discussion and it appears that she will resign. ”
Another source showed that President Tinubu advised party leaders to find a balanced solution to ensure fair representation, especially for Lagos West, who lacks a key position in state leadership.
“The president believes that Lagos West should not be on the sidelines and he supports a solution that addresses all the benefits,” the source added.
It reportedly has been pressured to resign, with multiple meetings being held to address the issue.
“There was pressure on Melanda to resign. She was planning to read the resignation at home last week, but lawmakers disagreed with her. There was a meeting on this, according to Assembly sources.
A letter proposing Meranda’s resignation surfaced last week, but it has never been officially read in Congress. Sources claim she is facing pressure to resign from Abuja.
Her aide, Segun Ajiboe, denied reporting her resignation.
Facebook user Ayoade Adeniyi also commented on the situation, saying that the final solution has not yet been reached.
“Oroli Oko gave a direct order that women should resign. All honorable members were in Lagos House, Marina on February 22, 2025, along with the governor.
“We don’t know who he oversaw.”
Adeniyi warned that while lawmakers were open to working with alternative candidates, reviving Obasa could cause serious backlash.
