The World Health Organization (WHO) reported more than 35,000 suspected cases of mpox and nearly 1,000 related deaths in Africa from January 1 to September 29, 2024.

In the week of September 23-29, the number of infections increased by 4,098, and the number of deaths increased by 156.
Since the beginning of this year, doctors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have seen a particularly high incidence of monkeypox, with 30,766 cases and 990 deaths. Burundi is in second place, with 1,368 suspected cases since the beginning of the year. No deaths have been reported in the country.
The global health emergency surrounding MPOX was originally in effect from July 2022 until May 11, 2023. Although lifted due to a decline in the incidence of the disease, on August 14, 2024, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared a national emergency again.
