Today’s episode of AMDG is the fourth and final installment in our series on faith and politics leading up to the 2024 presidential election here in the United States. Our guest is Tom Malloy, director of government affairs for the Jesuit Conference.
Sometimes people say that we have a government relations director, and that our Department of Justice and Ecology spends the majority of its time here in Washington meeting with legislators and people in power trying to influence laws and policy. You may be surprised to find out how much you spend on. Tom is essentially a lobbyist, but in this case you have to think about that word differently. Rather than lobbying on behalf of big oil or big tech companies like Google, Tom works with other faith groups and NGOs to advocate for a more just and peaceful world. He brings the voices and experiences of the vast Jesuit network into the halls of power to humanize issues ranging from immigration to taxation to Indigenous housing. Host Mike Jordan Lasky asks Tom to tell us how he got into this work and why his faith calls him to bring gospel values to the Capitol. I asked. They also discussed how we can all receive faith-filled information on behalf of justice. Because politics is not just about elections. It is about enabling those we choose to pursue the common good.
AMDG is a production of the Jesuit Media Lab, a project of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States.
