Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Onueze Chukwuzinka Okocha, said Nyesom Wike had no role in the Rivers State local government election crisis.
Mr Okocha, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said it was a mistake to blame the crisis on Mr Wike, a former Rivers State governor.
Mr Okocha, in an interview with Channels TV on Friday, said anyone accusing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of playing cards in the municipal election crisis had been misinformed.
“The Minister of the FCT is not a party to this matter. Why should someone call him by name? The issues involved are matters of law and have nothing to do with individuals.
“The stakeholders are the agencies, All Progressives Congress (APC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Rivers State Attorney General, Rivers State Government and the State Security Service.
“People should move away from parochialism and blaming individuals to score cheap political points,” Okocha said.
The former NBA president called on Governor Siminalaya Hubala to comply with the court order and cancel the municipal elections scheduled for today (Saturday).
He said the refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to submit the voter register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the police statement that its staff would not participate in the elections were enough to make the governor He said it was enough to cancel the election.
“The way forward is for the State Independent Electoral Commission, the Rivers State Governor represented by the Rivers State Attorney General, to comply with the court’s order.
“INEC said we have not given them the register and will not give it to them as per the court order.
“The Inspector General of Police, through the Rivers State Police Spokesman, said we will comply with the court order and will not provide election security,” Okocha added.
