What is the McRib?
The McRib is a pork patty shaped like a rack of ribs, made with pork, water, salt, glucose, and, would you believe it, rosemary extract? It’s served on a bun with barbecue sauce, pickles, and onions and weighs 520 calories.
The McRib was invented in 1979 by McDonald’s executive chef Rene Arend, who also created Chicken McNuggets. But it grew out of University of Nebraska professor Roger Mandigo’s development of reconstituted meat for military use. The sandwich debuted in Kansas City, Kansas in 1981 and became available nationwide the following year.
The McRib, which was on McDonald’s menu from 1989 to 2005, is the most popular fast food to be discontinued, according to online gaming site Spin Genie. Spin Genie analyzed Google search data to see what kind of fast food people were looking for. The McRib received far more searches from July 2023 to June 2024 than its closest competitors, including Chipotle Carne Asada, Domino’s Brooklyn Style Pizza, and Taco Bell’s Encilito.
The McRib hasn’t been on the menu since 2012, but started appearing annually starting in 2019.

McDonald’s is offering bulk purchases to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), which provides medical care to families with sick and injured children. Some local McDonald’s restaurants will be running a special promotion, and in Missouri, for every french fries purchased, the restaurant will donate one penny to the local RMHC House.
In an effort to draw attention to McDonald’s bid for RMHC, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace wore a special logo on his firefighter suit and customized his car at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Oct. 27. I’m planning on designing it.
The decal on the driver’s side of his car represents the RMHC family in his home state of Alabama.
