The Labor Party (LP) has rubbished speculation that Abia State Governor Alex Otti is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiola Ifor, refuted the allegations as baseless.
Naija News reports that at least five members of the opposition party, including Mr. Alex Otti in Abia, Mr. Peter Mba in Enugu State, Sheriff Obolewori in Delta State, Mr. Siminalai Hubala in Rivers and Mr. Umo Eno in Akwa Ibom State We understand that there have been reports of a possible defection plot involving the first-term governor. . Mr Mbaha, Mr Hubara, Mr Eno and Mr Obolewori belong to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Mr Otti is a member of the Labor Party. Both parties are currently grappling with internal post-election challenges in 2023.
Commenting on the allegations, Mr Ifor reiterated that there is no truth to claims that Governor Otti intends to leave the Labor Party.
“This is just a rumor and we hope it remains that way. We as the Labor Party have been in touch with the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and he has assured us that it is not going anywhere for 2027. It’s a problem we’re working hard to solve,” he said.
Mr. Ifor acknowledged that defections are common in a democratic system, but stressed that Governor Otti has no plans to align with the APC.
“Courts have been brought several times seeking interpretation of Article 84 of the 1999 Constitution and many people who once defected have been challenged in court. Therefore, if five governors are planning to defect But it’s not new because it’s happened in the past,” Ifor explained.
He blamed rumors of defection on the difficulties faced by some opposition governors in running the state, but maintained that such speculation regarding Otti had no credibility.
“We are in good hands within the Labor Party and the governors are with us. We expect more governors to join by 2027,” he added.
