The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Sunday announced the acquisition of a Cessna Grand Caravan Ex-208B aircraft to strengthen anti-smuggling operations across the country.
The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, reportedly inspected the newly acquired aircraft in Bartlesville, Washington, US, according to a statement by the agency’s National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada.
According to Maiwada, this acquisition was a pivotal moment for the operation of the NCS Air Wing.
The aircraft, registered as 5N-BAA, will enhance the service’s air patrol and surveillance efforts.
Powered by PT6 Pratt & Whitney engines, the Cessna Grand Caravan is globally recognized for its rugged versatility, short takeoff and landing capabilities, and ability to operate from remote airstrips, making it well-suited for Nigeria’s border security operations .
CGC Adeniyi emphasized the importance of the acquisition, noting that the aircraft is equipped with the latest Garmin G1000 Avionics cockpit system and is capable of operating day and night and in low visibility conditions. .
“This aircraft will be a game-changer for the Air Wing of the Nigeria Customs Service. The ability to transport 10 officers and six hours of airborne endurance will significantly enhance our aerial surveillance and border security capabilities. ” said CGC Adeniyi.
The Cessna Grand Caravan plays a vital role in air patrols to detect smuggling routes, deploy armed personnel, and provide rapid support to ground operations.
“With this aircraft, we will strengthen our air border security capabilities, which will not only deter illegal activities but also provide rapid evacuation support if required,” explained CGC Adeniyi. The move is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda.
The statement further added that the aircraft will serve as a strategic asset for the Nigeria Customs Technical and Hunger Services Company, providing logistical support and revenue generation to the service.
Mr. Adeniyi highlighted the cost-effectiveness of the Cessna Grand Caravan, noting that its operating costs are relatively low compared to other aircraft in its class.
“This is a long-term investment in the service that will not only improve operational efficiency but also contribute to the sustainability of the air surveillance program,” he added.
