The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has declared the candidate of the Action Peoples Party (APP) as the winner of the 314th ward municipal council election in the just concluded local government elections in the state.
This was as the newly elected chairmen of the 23 Local Government Area Councils in the state took the oath of office at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Sunday night.
The chairman candidate of Action Alliance (AA) in Etche Local Government Area of the state, Mr Uzodimma Nwafor, has been declared the winner of the local government area chairmanship election.
RSIEC said in a statement issued on Sunday by Chief Returning Officer and Commission Chairman Justice Adolphus Enebeli (RTD) that other political parties won the remaining seats in the local government parliamentary elections.
Enebeli said APP won 314 parliamentary positions, but also other political parties such as All Progressives Congress (APC), BOOT Party, Labor Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Young Democratic Party (YPP). said. ) each won one seat.
At the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected city council president, Governor Siminalai Hubara said that with the elections over, the state will not only see democracy flourish, but the people will see a satisfying democratic dividend. He said that we have entered a season of change. their aspirations.
Mr. Hubala was very happy to acknowledge the support of Rivers people in the fight to restore local government system in the state. According to him, the local government system in the state was on the brink of destruction due to the activities of some subversive political forces seeking to take control of it. .
He said an attempt was made to break into the RSIEC headquarters three days before polling day, adding to the pressure to subvert the local government system in Rivers State.
Hubala said: “But the truth remains, desperate situations call for desperate measures, and we have found ourselves in a situation where local government in this state is heading for disaster.
“And the truth is, because of the true love we have for this state, we must save our local government elections.
“And what we did with the support of Rivers residents was to save the local government council. And to the glory of God, it was done and dusted.”
The governor said that the elections are now over and his administration has no intention of confronting or fighting anyone in any undemocratic manner during the remainder of his term.
On the contrary, he vowed to continue using peaceful means to ensure that Rivers State’s assets are protected.
“We assure the federal government that we will engage in anything that leads to the breakdown of law and order in this state,” Hubala said.
“This is because we are fully aware that Nigeria will suffer if there is a breakdown of law and order in this state and we will not be complicit in it. That’s why our standards were high.”
