A fire broke out on Saturday night, destroying several shops at the popular Kantin Kwari textile market in Kano.
The fire, which broke out around 7pm, started at Gidan Inuwa Maimai on Bayajida Street and quickly spread to adjacent buildings in the busy market.
Valarabe Tatari, president of the market’s traders association, confirmed the incident and said the fire could have spread further had it not been for the timely intervention of the federal and state fire services.
“The quick intervention of the Kano State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and reinforcements from nearby Sabon Gari, Dawanau and Singer Markets prevented the fire from spreading,” Tatari said.
While firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, security personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities were also dispatched to the scene to ensure safety in the area. Mr Tatari expressed concern over the overcrowding of the market and the lack of accessible roads, which he said contributed to the delay in the arrival of fire engines to the scene.
He called on the state government to take urgent steps to remove structures blocking access and improve drainage systems, noting that such problems have contributed to the spread of fires at the market in the past. pointed out.
Meanwhile, Kano State Fire Service spokesperson Saminu Abdullahi confirmed the fire, but said full details of the incident were still being collected.
