In this conversation, hosted by Ulta and moderated by Billboard Latin social media manager and staff writer Ingrid Fajardo, six Latin music stars discuss the challenges of being women at the Fillmore Miami Beach. They talked about things and created an atmosphere of friendship. Industry and recent advances.
“I feel like the world is changing in a positive way. It’s changing, but slowly,” Mon Laferte said. “When I started in music, there weren’t many women on stage or behind the scenes. You see women in tech, audio engineers, producers, but it’s because the world is changing. It shows the fact that
While emphasizing the importance of cooperating and supporting each other, they noted that they often encountered men in the industry who were accomplices and allies.
Here are their best quotes from this year’s women’s panel:
Bad Gyal on mental health and social media: “One of the gentler ways to deal with it is to accept that anxiety exists and that if someday you don’t feel like uploading anything, that’s okay. I is a bad gal, but she’s also Alba (her real name) and lives a real life. I’m connected to my childhood and my true nature, and that helps too.”
Belinda says of her recent foray into Mexican music: “Three or four years ago, they told me that the genre wasn’t for women, that I wouldn’t be able to record those songs. Nathanael Cano gave me a lot of inspiration. (…) When you do things with feeling and fight for what you want, your life changes. You have to take risks and gradually lose fear.”
Danna on women’s alliances in music: “It’s important and necessary. When we talk, the world moves. We need to pivot and know that we are colleagues, not competitors. Now we can (…) We are making a huge change. Women are in charge of everything. We are shaking up the world here.”
Debi Nova on the music industry in her native Costa Rica: “Growing up there, I never knew there were any women in this country who were dedicated to music, but now a whole generation of girls are making that leap. It’s a challenge to say it’s possible, and what I’m saying is, come to my country, little girls look at them and say, “If she can do it, so can I.” It’s partly because of this generation of women. ”
Mon Laferte has this to say about how to deal with haters: I really like that sometimes they think I’m the worst (…) It’s a “she sucks, she sucks” personality. I’m laughing with my daughter at home. Maybe it’s because I’m older, and age plays a role too. ”
Zamira Zambrano on how she maintains her essence despite the pressures of the industry: Having that strong foundation at home works for me (…) If you’re happy and satisfied with yourself and confident in yourself, you’re going to radiate that out into the world. Probably. Women are becoming more empowered, but it is never enough. “We have to keep watering that little plant.”
