As Nigeria celebrates its 64th anniversary of independence, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on all Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey and reaffirm their commitment to the principles of unity, peace and progress.
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in a statement on the occasion of Nigeria’s independence celebrations, on Tuesday stressed the importance of recognizing Nigeria’s rich diversity.
Mr. Okoh said Nigeria is a shining example of strength found in diversity, highlighting the resilience and common efforts that have characterized Nigeria amidst numerous challenges.
The Archbishop praised recent efforts to address security threats, in light of terrorism and banditry affecting many communities, particularly in Christian-majority areas.
He called for continued vigilance and support in efforts to protect the right of all Nigerians to live without fear.
Speaking on important issues of social justice, the CAN President emphasized the urgent need for improved education and employment opportunities, especially for the country’s youth.
“By prioritizing these areas, we will not only empower our youth but also lay the foundation for a prosperous future,” Okoh said.
Reiterating the importance of religious freedom, Mr. Okon urged all Nigerians to embrace mutual respect and understanding, reminding that a society that values religious diversity is fit to thrive in harmony. It reminded me.
“This is essential not only for Christians but for all religious groups in Nigeria,” he said.
He also called for national development, with emphasis on infrastructure development, economic expansion and youth empowerment.
Mr. Okoh said targeted investments in these areas are important to both the Christian community and the broader Nigerian public.
He urged Nigerians to be courageous in spirit, remain hopeful and strive towards a common vision for a better Nigeria.
“Together we can overcome the challenges before us and celebrate the richness of our diverse heritage,” he said.
