To commemorate World Teachers’ Day, the Educational Universities and Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has awarded N3.5 million to six outstanding students representing one of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
In addition, the union presented Legacy Awards to notable educators, including Mr. Arc, executive director of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Sonny Olowede. The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede. Former Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Abdulmalik Mahmud, and other notable recipients of the award.
The COEASU 2024 International Teachers Day celebration and awards to the best students were held in Abuja on Friday under the theme “Making teachers’ voices count towards the repositioning of teacher education in Nigeria”.
COEASU President Dr. Smart Olugbeko said the award was initiated to promote academic excellence.
“Our union has institutionalized scholarships for outstanding students in the Nigerian College of Education System. Through a transparent, objective and externally coordinated examination process, we We have determined the best students in the College of Education and the best overall among them.”
He also called on government agencies, private organizations, award recipients and individuals with good intentions for educational development to donate to these awards on behalf of students.
The list of winners includes Nwachukwu Chioma Ruth, the best student of North Central Zone of Nasarawa State College of Education, Akwanga; Musa Abdullahi Musa, Best Student of the North East Zone of Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, Bauchi State. and Nusaiba Awal Barau, the best student of the North West Zone of Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, Kano State.
Others include Nwoha Johnson Obinna, the best student of the South East Zone of the Benjamin Uwajomogu State College of Education, Ihite Uboma, Imo State; Ezeanov Chisom Miracle, Best Student of the South-South Zone of the Federal College of Education (Technology), Asaba, Delta State. Ratna Mubarak is the best student in the South-West region of the Federal University of Education, Iwo Jima, Osun State, and the best student in Nigeria as a whole.
Minister of Education Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu presented the awards to the students and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers.
