Two policemen who were on a search mission to Nnewi-Uluagu area in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State have been killed by a criminal gang.
The deceased policemen were among a team of police officers dispatched to the area in the early hours of Thursday by the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, to investigate crimes in the area.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said hoodlums ambushed and attacked the police investigation team.
Ikenga said that upon sighting the thugs, the police team opened fire sporadically and even threw improvised explosive devices into a commercial vehicle.
He regretted that in the process, two police officers were killed and their vehicle was set ablaze.
Anambra State Police Spokesperson said CP Itam has already dispatched a team of police operatives to hunt down the fleeing gang and provide the public, especially those who witnessed the attack, with any useful information that could lead to their arrest. “Joint security forces will launch a search operation against armed men who killed two police personnel during a search operation in Uluagu, northern Nnewi, in the early hours of today, March 10, 2024,” Ikenga said in a statement. .
“Preliminary information suggests that the armed men opened fire sporadically on sighting police personnel and threw an improvised explosive device into an operational vehicle.
“Unfortunately, two of the operatives paid the ultimate price as their vehicle burst into flames,” he said.
Following the incident, the command appealed to the public, particularly witnesses and others, to assist ongoing police operations in the area.
