The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has dismissed reports alleging that the incumbent local government chairman, who is seeking re-election, has been directed to resign before the 2025 municipal elections.
In a statement issued on Monday night, the state APC spokesperson, Mr Seyi Oladejo, said the report was false and intended to mislead both the public and party members.
Mr. Oladejo stressed that there is no truth in the allegation that the Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ogelabi, gave such instructions.
He clarified that the directive in question was actually aimed at municipal party chairmen who are planning to participate in the next election, and not at city council presidents who are seeking re-election.
“We have drawn attention to the false instructions allegedly given by the Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojellabi, to the incumbent Council Chairman who is resigning from office to seek re-election.
“We would like to make it abundantly clear that this publication does not contain any truth as it has been distorted to suit the interests of the publishers,” Oladejo said.
He further said the directive was being twisted to cause confusion and called on party members and the public to ignore misleading information.
“For the sake of emphasis, local government party chairpersons who are also candidates for the next election will be required to resign from their current positions once the guidelines are announced.
“I would like to appeal to members of the party and the general public not to spread misleading information that may overheat the party,” Oladejo added.
Mr. Oladejo assured that APC members and the public should await the official election guidelines from the newly reconstituted Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
The spokesperson urged party supporters to focus on promoting activities that promote unity, understanding and cooperation within the party.
