SHEF Mousha Gabham, national chairman of the Social Democrats (SDP), has revealed that after the recent recent exile of all Progressive Congresses (APCs) of former Kaduna governor Nasir Elfai, the APC, more prominent politicians are on the crisis of joining the party.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Monday, Gabam said El-Rufai’s move sparked a wave of interest from top politicians, particularly in Kaduna state, across party boundaries.
Gabam refused to reveal a particular name, but party insiders suggest that former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Osan Governor Rauf Aregbesola are among those reportedly considering moving to SDP.
El Rufai recently held a closed door meeting with Alegbesola and Rev. Tande Bakare in Lagos, promoting further speculation.
He also visited former President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Vies Atiq Abubakar, raising questions about the broader political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election.
However, Feyemi refused to plan to abandon the APC.
In a statement Tuesday, he said: I have had reasons to state in the past, so I am a member of the APC Card Carrying Foundation and this position has not changed. ”
However, he criticized the APC’s internal democracy, saying, “I was a pioneer in demand for greater internal democracy and inclusion in the ruling party, but I don't think our party is behind changing courses and moving towards greater inclusion and internal democracy.”
SDP will not be integrated with other Gabam stakeholders
Meanwhile, Gabam reiterated that the ongoing wave of SDP exiles is part of a broader push to redefine Nigerian democracy and ensure better governance for the people.
He rejected the proposal that the SDP is planning to merge with other opposition parties, saying:
Gabam said: “SDP is not consistent with supporters of political party amalgamation. It’s a chaotic recipe. What we do is strengthen the structure at the grassroots level.”
He also made it clear that El Rufai’s asylum is not necessarily tied to the president’s ambitions, and said that all applicants within the SDP must go through a transparent grassroots process before securing the support of the parties.
“The party’s philosophy has been established in grassroots democratic participation. All potential applicants must go through the process from the grassroots level to prevent imposing,” he said.
