The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) is scheduled to conduct local government elections in the state on November 2.
Its chairman, lawyer Ayuba Usman, disclosed this at a meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) in Lafia, the state capital, on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the commission also announced guidelines for the conduct of the proposed elections.
Usman said the announcement was made in accordance with guidelines and voting dates, avoiding a lawsuit filed by the victims to bar parliament from holding the scheduled early elections.
According to the leadership report, the term of office of the current President will be sworn in on October 8, 2021 and will end on Monday, October 7, 2024.
The commission had earlier issued an election notification that scheduled the polls to be held on August 31, 2024, in accordance with existing laws.
However, the commission was served with an initial summons from the Lafia Federal High Court in a matter raised by attorney Paul A. John. 12 others.
Others object to the Legislature and the Commission, challenging Section 8(e) of the 2018 State Local Government Elections Act and Sections 3j, 3k and 9 of the 2024 Local Government Election Guidelines .
As a result of this result, the commission indefinitely postponed all activities scheduled for the conduct of the poll.
“After a victorious day in court, the court dismissed the suit and upheld all of our claims. The plaintiffs, dissatisfied with the judgment, filed a notice of appeal with the Makurdi Court of Appeal; On Thursday, September 26, 2024, the notice of withdrawal/cessation of the notice of appeal was suddenly filed, paving the way for District Court action in the 2024 Council of Government elections.
“After studying and analyzing the judgment of the Federal High Court, the Commission has decided that Lafia will issue an election notice today, October 2, 2024, and the 2024 local government elections will be held in November 2024. We planned to do it on the 2nd,” Usman explained.
He said the commission complies with the current law to publish guidelines for the 2024 local government elections.
