The Taraba State Commissioner for Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Habu James Philip, has reacted to allegations that the state government’s policies are aimed at sustaining poverty.
He explained that the state government is committed to sustainable development.
Philip made the remarks in response to social media criticism calling for his resignation over comments he made at a workshop on poverty reduction and sustainable development in China.
He made it clear that his intention during his presentation was to discuss sustainable development efforts, not the maintenance of poverty.
He described the accusation as a misunderstanding due to a mistake in language and said he did not suggest that the administration under Governor Agbu Cefas would work to “maintain poverty.”
Speaking in Jalingo on Monday, the commissioner explained that it was simply a “gaffe”, but he quickly corrected it.
“This was a simple mistake during a workshop on poverty reduction and sustainable development in China. I meant to say that our government is committed to sustaining development, but I mistakenly said “development” instead of “development.” I ended up using the word “poverty.” We fixed it immediately,” the commissioner clarified.
He further highlighted Governor Kefas’ commitment to poverty alleviation and development in the state, stressing that his administration is dedicated to reducing poverty levels in Taraba.
“I urge all Tarabans to ignore publications that suggest that I have said that the government will maintain poverty. We will continue to maintain development and remove Taraba from the poverty index list. “We are focusing on that,” he added.
