Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has expressed doubts about whether the opposition coalition will be able to oust President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
In an interview with DAILY POST, Mr. Adeyanju claimed that the opposition parties had missed an important opportunity in the 2023 presidential election by failing to unite and present a unified candidate to challenge Mr. Tinubu.
He stressed that the 2023 elections posed a unique advantage for the opposition as former President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly opposed Tinubu’s candidacy.
Mr Adeyanju said: “What is the point of the merger?” Isn’t it to win elections? They cannot win elections against Tinubu’s alliance. They should continue on the path of ego. I urge them to remain divided so that Tinubu’s “Babalawo” can get a raise.
“In the last election, they had only one job because we had an ignorant and unresponsible president. He failed so badly that his body language showed that he didn’t want Tinubu to win. It was suggested that the opposition should therefore simply present a united front, but they rejected it.
“Instead, they chose to wage an ego war. Kwankwaso said he was the next president, but so did Obi and Atiku. They divided their votes while INEC and Tinubu united. They had a chance and they squandered it. This Tinubu will not lose any election. You can see how the IReV results are different from those announced in the just-concluded Edo election. Didn’t you?
“There is no point because Mr. Tinubu cannot lose an election he organizes. They should not merge. They should just entertain us and their supporters. There is no need for merger. Everyone should go and test their popularity.
“All I see is a merger between Tinubu and INEC in a country where the people’s vote doesn’t matter. When you say merger, look at the Edo elections and see what happens in Ondo formally. Look at the elections in Kogi and Imo. No real elections took place in those places. Is that the country you are talking about? They had a chance to defeat APC. , I was too busy goofing around and playing to the gallery.”
