The Arewa Youths for Peace and Security has called on President Bola Tinubu to repair the road linking Kiama with Wawa and Kosbos communities in Kwara State.
The appeal came after members of the group visited Kiama for the annual crab festival.
The organization’s Secretary-General Salihu Dantata Mahmoud expressed shock at the deplorable condition of the roads, calling the situation dire and detrimental to the prosperity of the region.
“What we have witnessed is nothing short of a disaster,” Mahmoud told a news conference. “The supposed short journey from Wawa to Kiama now takes an agonizing four to five hours. The situation is even worse from Kiama to Kosvos, with travel times extending to six to seven hours,” he added. .
The youth leader said the Kiama region, rich in agricultural resources, was cut off from the rest of the country by inaccessible roads.
“Economic activity has virtually stopped and the outside world has been forced to boycott the area because of the road situation,” he added.
The youths invited President Tinubu, members of Parliament and the Minister of Labor and Housing on an unscheduled visit to the affected areas, believing that experiencing the roads firsthand would highlight the urgency of the situation.
The group highlighted the historical importance of Kiama, which has been the seat of local government since the late 1980s.
